The Magic of Christmas

Here in the UK we rarely see snow at all, let alone in December, yet we all dream of having a beautiful, white Christmas. It’s depicted in fairy tales, on Christmas cards and in all the Christmas movies. We all know the chance of it actually happening is extremely low, but it doesn’t stop us hoping for it. Well, those of us who truly believe in the magic of Christmas, anyway.

A few years ago now, a very good friend of mine was working away on Christmas Eve. He arrived in Wales early that morning to a few gentle snowflakes fluttering to the ground. By sunset, a thick white coat covered the land. He was eager to get back to his family after a hard day’s work, but what he did next was incredible. He took a spade and began to shovel the snow into the back of his van.

Back at home when the children were asleep, he set to work, and the following morning the three children woke up to Santa’s presents at the end of their beds. On the carpet they saw some silver, glittery footprints, which they followed out of the room, down the stairs, to the front door. And when they opened the door, they couldn’t believe their eyes. The garden was covered in snow and there, in the middle, was a snowman – complete with scarf, pipe, and carrot nose.

For a very long time, those children felt so special that it had only snowed at their house. And I’m sure it’s a memory they will never forget.

That, to me, is magical. It’s what Christmas is all about…reaching out and taking just a little time to touch others.

I know we all like to give presents at Christmas (and ok, I’ll admit it…I do like receiving them too!) but it’s rarely the presents we remember. An act of kindness or meaningful words…they are the things we’ll take with us into the future, and treasure.

I’ve seen a lot of love here in Blogworld these past few days. What TME is doing right now on her site has had me welling up since she started it three days ago. If you haven’t been over there, I urge you to take a look. The words she has written, I am certain, will mean far more to the people she is writing about than a gift wrapped present ever could. She’s told me that mine is to come and to be honest, I know I’ll have tears rolling down my cheeks. She really is an incredible woman, and I love her dearly.

I know there are people out there who may not be looking forward to Christmas this year. There are people who are alone and wishing they had a special someone to share it with. I know, sadly, that Dan has recently lost his father, and others will also be spending their first Christmas without a loved one. And this morning I heard the very sad news that a fellow blogger, Anu, has been killed in a car accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew and loved her. Through reading just a few of her entries, she has touched my life even in her death. Again, I urge you to take a look…and if you wish to say a few words, WDKY is gathering condolences to send to her family…another truly wonderful thing for somebody to do.

Whatever you are doing this Christmas….whatever your circumstances…please, just treasure every single, precious moment. And remember – it really doesn’t have to snow for it to be a White Christmas.

I want to thank each and every one of you for sprinkling a little of your magic into my life. x

I absolutely love the imported snowman. That is EXACTLY what Christmas is about — the magic that love makes.

And love is magic, make no mistake about that. I like to be Joe Cynic (with a side of Harold Smartmouth), but I’m really pretty smooshy, when you get right down to it. Merry Christmas, you sweet lady. Hope yours is full of lovewonder.

Your post captures the essence of what this holiday is about. It isn’t about churches, or presents, or even a baby born long ago. It’s about loving each other today. Why we as a species do such a poor job of it is beyond me. But at least here in Blogland we practice it every day.

Peace to you and your family, my dear friend. And thank you for all the kind, exciting and funny words and thoughts you’ve shared with us.

  9. Miss Understood says:
